If you enjoyed the spine-tingling choral sound of the choir at Westminster Abbey serenading the King’s Coronation earlier this month, there’s more of the same on offer at our upcoming concert.
We are thrilled to be performing our music From the Heavens at Douai Abbey. If you’ve never visited this amazing place before, you’re in for a treat. The Abbey’s unusual name comes from the former home of its Benedictine community, in the north of France. It’s a building of two parts - the first built in 1933 and the second in 1989. Described as “decorated gothic meets post-modern” and “an intelligent tribute to Gothic revival”, the light, airy space has been likened by some to Liverpool Cathedral.
To match the awe of the setting, our Musical Director has come up with a truly heavenly spread of choral music that spans 400 years, rather like the Coronation programme. From traditional choral wizards Byrd and Purcell via Bruckner, Mendelssohn, Holst and Wesley to rising stars Dubra, Hawes and Biebl, we’ll be filling the Abbey with gloriously rich harmonies, ancient and modern, including Ave Marias, motets and psalms.
